Outer Loading at Partial Least Squares Output

When we do an analysis with Partial Least Square, one of the most disputed results of analysis by researchers is the Outer Loading value. Outer Loading Value is the value obtained from the results of the Partial Least Squares analysis which describes the size of the indicator contribution to the variable. For more details, here are examples of analysis of outer loading

Outer Loading at Partial Least Squares Output
Outer Loading Analysis

Based on the picture below, it shows that the value of outer loading for each indicator is X1.1 (0.813), X1.2 (0.770), X1.3 (0.592) and X1.4 (0.966) the outer loading value shows the magnitude of the contribution of indicators to the variable (Y). The meaning of outer loading above can be explained that the value of outer loading X1.1 is as big (0.813) or it can be explained that the Outer loading X1.1 contributes to the variable (Y) of 81.3%, the X1.2 indicator contributes (0.770), X1.3 of (0.592) and X1.4 of (0.966). The larger the outer loading value, the greater the contribution of the indicator to the variable (Y) if the outer loading is low. (See here tutorial)

Dropping Low Outer Loading

However, it should be noted that PLS requires an outer loading value of 0.7. So if you pay attention to the Outer Loading X1.3 value of (0.592), the outer loading value is considered inadequate / valid by PLS to measure the variable (Y). So according to PLS that if the outer loading value is less than 0.7, the indicator must be dropped (omitted in the model). As a note for PLS users that the value of Partial Least Square outer loading (can be more than 1 if you do not use standardized values. But with a standardized value where mean = 0 and variance = 1, then the outer loading value is not more than 1)

Development of Meaning of Outer Loading Values.

Some researchers confirm that the outer loading value is not only meaningful as a contribution to the variable. But it can be used to combine with the perception value in the description description. The reason for combining the value of the variable description and the outer loading value is analogous to a marketing phenomenon that the variable description shows the reality or performance of an activity while the outer loading value is a value that shows the order of expectations for the activity carried out, in short, that one's satisfaction is compared between expectations (outer loading value) and performance (perception value).
